Support Services
SPEECH AND LANGUAGE
The speech and language teacher is available to evaluate and work with children who have speech and language development difficulties. The students referred to the speech pathologist work in small groups or are provided services in the classroom on a regular basis. The therapist works closely with parents, as well as the classroom teacher, and recommends ways in which the child can be helped at home and in the classroom.
PSYCHOLOGIST
School psychologists are highly trained in both psychology and education. They use different models and methods of assessment to identify students' needs and develop data-driven services and programs. Multiple levels of credentialing include licensure. School psychologists are mandated members of committees identifying need for special services.
ELEMENTARY GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
School Counselors provide preventative and responsive services for all students in the academic, college/career and social/developmental domains through individual, group and whole-class interventions, including annual review of each secondary student's educational progress and career plans.
SOCIAL WORKER
Social Workers are educators who are expert in assessment, individual and group counseling, and crisis intervention. Their systems' approach provides a pivotal link between school, home and community-based assistance. School social workers are both licensed mental health professionals and certified school social workers. Their license allows districts to bill their services.
COMMITTEE ON SPECIAL EDUCATION
The Committee on Special Education (CSE) is appointed by the Board of Education and is responsible for the approval and annual review of all classified children. The CSE is also responsible for evaluation and placement of children who have been identified as needing special assistance.
